ANNUAL JOHNNY WEAVER CUP TOURNAMENT
As
part of the huge Summer Action Series, CWF Mid-Atlantic again hosts
the annual Johnny Weaver Cup Tournament. The summer long single elimination
tournament always features some unique matchups and has provided a wealth
of
tremendous bouts each year.
The
participants are fighting for the honor of being named the 2006 Johnny
Weaver Cup Champion and the prestigue that comes with it. The eventual
winner is awarded the trophy cup by the legendary Johnny Weaver in the
ring on the night of the finals. The winner also receives a guaranteed
title bout for the AWA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Championship.

Twenty
of the top grapplers, hand-selected by Johnny Weaver, will battle it
out in the grueling summer long tournament. The final four will arrive
in Burlington, NC at the Carolina Sports Arena on Saturday, August 26th.
The semi-finals and finals will then take place to crown the 2006 Johnny
Weaver Cup Winner!

participants with first round byes include:
Jesse
Ortega - 2005 Johnny Weaver Cup Winner
Last
year's winner not only captured the Cup, but he also defended the AWA
Mid-Atlantic Television Title throughout the entire tournament. His
tremendous showing set a new modern-day record for TV Title defenses.
Ortega is a favorite to make the final four and arepeat is certainly
not out of the question.
Ric
Converse - AWA Mid-Atlantic Hwt. Champion
He
was the runner-up in the first ever Johnny Weaver Cup Tournament in
2004. Converse is the reigning AWA Mid-Atlantic Hwt. Champion and the
#1 ranked contender in the world to the AWA World Hwt. Title. He's the
odds on favorite to win this year's tournament with his incredible run
of wins since capturing the heavyweight crown in December.
Garry
Stevens - AWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champion
The
Madd Trucker is a former AWA Mid-Atlantic Hwt. Champion, last year's
runner-up in the 2005 Weaver Cup, and 1/2 of the current AWA Mid-Atlantic
Tag Team Champions. Big, strong, mean, and almost impervious to pain,
Stevens is regarded as a definite threat to sweep this year's contest.
Corey
Edsel - 2004 Johnny Weaver Cup Winner
Edsel
defeated Ric Converse to capture the first Weaver Cup in 2004. He's
been out of action in the CWF Mid-Atlantic since last November. However
Cornelius J. Lumpkin III make him a monetary offer Edsel couldn't refuse
to return. His purpose is simple, to eliminate Tank Lawson and anyone
supporting him. However Lumpkin entered Edsel into this year's tournament
with the purpose of presenting the trophy cup to his financial backers
in the United Arab Emirates.

There
are four 1st Round bouts. Those four winners will advance to meet one
of the four first round bye entrants. There are also four other 2nd
Round bouts. All 1st round bye participants were selected on their previous
Weaver Cup performances. The other 16 entrants were randomly assigned
positioned in the tournament.

Due to winning the AWA World Hwt. Title, Converse has to withdraw from
the tournament. Manning receives a bye into the quarterfinals. Manning
offered to put up his spot against all comers and defeated Julius Augustus
& KC McKnight in the special challenge bout. Manning advances to
the quarterfinals.
