How it Began... "Big Daddy" Mike Maverick and "The Show" Shane Helms (Then known as Kid Vicious) started off as anything but friends. Helms was involved in an intense feud with one of Maverick's Gulf Coast Posse stablemates, The Gemini Kid. Helms was attacked several times by the Gemini Kid and other members of the GCP, and every time, Maverick was there to administer a little bit of punishment of his own! Then, a few years later, two of the four members of the GCP left the Posse. With only Gemini and Maverick left to hold the fort, the GCP kinda drifted off into obscurity. "The Show" went on to Lightweight fame, securing Five Lightweight championships before forming a tag-team with his close friend Michael Yamaha. The two went undefeated in Lightweight competition for quite some time, and the tandem seemed to have everything going their way! That was on the surface! But apparently, things weren't completely cool with the two as reports of arguments in the locker room became widespread. Enter Mike Maverick!!! Helms and Yamaha had become involved in a rivalry with another team and were scheduled to face them in a grudge match in Wilson, NC. Both teams entered the ring and were waiting for the bell to sound to start the match. However, instead of a bell, the entrance music of Big Daddy Mike started blaring over the speakers. Maverick made his way to the ring and asked for the microphone. Maverick went on to explain that he had accomplished everything he had set out to do in the independent ranks as a single's wrestler (Maverick's list of championships won is extensive!), that he was looking for a tag-team partner, and that the person he wanted to be his partner was in the ring. Maverick then walked over to Michael Yamaha, looked him up and down, giving everyone in the crowd the impression that Yamaha was the chosen one. However, instead of talking to Yamaha, Maverick pushed him aside and walked over to Shane Helms! No one was more surprised than Shane himself when Maverick made it clear that he wanted him (Shane) to be his partner. Maverick when on to criticize Michael Yamaha and to explain to Shane that their was no tag-team championships for Lightweights. To the fans delight, Helms made it clear that Michael Yamaha was his tag-team partner, but Maverick refused to take "no" for an answer and went and took a seat at ringside to watch the match. The Hellraisers (Rizing Sun & Ten-zu) used this confusion to get the advantage on Helms. The Hellraisers used various double-teaming tactics to wear down "The Show", before Helms mustered up a comeback and tried to make a tag to his partner, Yamaha. But Yamaha wasn't there! Maverick had been heavily taunting Yamaha during the match and went up and grabbed Yamaha from behind and pulled him to the floor. By the time Yamaha saw that Shane was there for a tag, Rizing Sun came and attacked Shane from behind and again The Hellraisers had the advantage. But Helms refused to give up, and eventually fought his way back to his corner. But once again, Maverick had Yamaha distracted, allowing the Ten-zu to pummel Shane again. The match appeared to be in the hands of The Hellraisers as they continued to wear Helms down, but finally, out of desperation, Shane nailed a DDT and crawled over to tag Yamaha, who wasn't being pulled away this time. The tag was made! Yamaha was on fire! Fully refreshed and ready to rumble, Yamaha had the fans standing as he took on both of the Suns at the same time! Helms then made his way back into the ring and grabbed one of the Suns and tried to Irish-whip him into the ropes, but the Sun reversed the whip, and was stunned as Shane came off the ropes and nailed his opponent with a Tour-the-World Headscissors! Yamaha, meanwhile had the other Sun completely at his mercy and was pounding him down in the corner. Shane saw this window of opportunity and placed his opponent on the top rope and executed a Super Frankensteiner which completely stunned his opponent. However, the ref was tied up with Yamaha and the other Sun, because they were the legal men. Helms, nearly exhausted, tried to go help Yamaha, but instead was sent out of the ring, right at the feet of Mike Maverick. As Helms struggled to get to his feet, Maverick was there, helping him up, talking to him, and telling him how the match could have already been won had Yamaha been paying attention earlier in the match. Helms didn't even see the Rising Suns double-teaming Yamaha behind his back and realized to late what was happening as the ref counted 1-2-3 and the Rising Suns had won the match. Helms was infuriated! The one thing Shane has always stated is that he doesn't like losing. "I know it's a natural aspect of sports, but that's doesn't mean I have to like it. In my experience, those that accept defeat, experience it more often than those that don't." Shane started chastising Yamaha for letting himself get distracted during the match, and then getting pinned after everything that he (Helms) went through to make the tag. A brief argument insued, until finally both Yamaha and Helms apologized to each other. Everything appeared cool, until Helms flattened Yamaha with a Superkick to the face. Helms then fed his former partner to Maverick who flattened Yamaha with a huge Powerbomb. Helms and Maverick then left the ring, but every fan could see the the hesitant look and faint hint of regret in the eyes of "The Show" as he watched the ring attendents come out to administer aid to his former friend. But the time for hesitation and regret is past! Now Helms and Maverick have become the closest of friends and by far the best tag-team on the Independent scene. In Federations such as OMEGA, NDW, SWA, and NWA2000, they have defeated every challenge to come their way. Their combination of the highflying-technical skill of Shane Helms combined with the power and tenacity of Big Daddy Mike has proved to be the equation for success.
